On July 1st 2025, the Bhutan Ecological Society (BES), in collaboration with the Paro Forest Division, Department of Forests and Park Services, initiated a plantation of 1,000 Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxylum spp.) saplings over 1 hectare of land in Shaba, Paro. This effort marks a unique blend of ecological restoration and climate-resilient agroforestry under the Mountains to Mangroves Initiative. Students from SFS Bhutan also participated in the plantation.
This initiative aims to transform degraded and fallow landscapes into high-value, biodiverse zones by integrating native spice species that provide both ecological and economic benefits to the local communities.
This plantation is part of the Mountains to Mangroves initiative, with community plantations underway in:
Samdrupjongkhar
Pemagatshel
Thimphu
Chukha
Trashigang
Samtse
These coordinated plantation efforts are contributing to our collective vision of building resilient ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and supporting sustainable livelihoods.
