Waste

Introduction

Bhutan faces increasing waste management challenges due to urbanization, population growth, and changing consumption patterns. The National Waste Inventory Survey (2019) revealed that Bhutan generates 172.16 metric tons of waste daily, with 46% being food waste and 33% comprising plastics and paper. Moreover, an independent study conducted in September 2024 showed that households in Thimphu alone generate more than 400 kilograms of waste daily, with a total of over 2,000 kilograms in five days. These findings reaffirm that waste management remains an emerging issue in Bhutan, requiring immediate and scalable solutions. The data indicates the likelihood of reducing the amount of waste generated provided that regular and impactful advocacy campaigns are carried out. It also indicates the need to explore avenues of recycling what is recyclable and composting the organic wastes.
