World Environment Day is a reminder that ecological recovery depends on sustained collective action. By the end of the 2026 planting season, BES expects its restoration programs to have planted approximately 1.3 million trees across Bhutan.
The Million Trees Project began in 2021 with support from the Bhutan Foundation and has contributed more than half a million trees. Since 2024, the Mountains to Mangroves initiative with Conservation International has added roughly another half million, with 400,000 more planned during 2026.
Restoration activities have reached Samdrup Jongkhar, Pemagatshel, Zhemgang, Thimphu, Paro, Bumthang, and Punakha, with work also planned in Chukha, Samtse, and Trashigang. Each planting supports healthier landscapes, stronger livelihoods, and a more resilient future.
